La Citadelle de Corte
The citadel of Corte, in the Haute-Corse, was built in 1420 by Vincentello d'Istria and is familiarly called the 'Eagle's Nest' by local people.
Thanks to its position at the confluence of the Tavignano and the Restonica, in the centre of the island on the road from Bastia to Ajaccio, Corte was traditionally a fortified town. Held by Genoa, the town joined France in 1553, but in 1559 the Treaty of Cateau-Cambrésis returned the island and Corte to Genoa. Later, in the 18th century, Pasquale Paoli made it the capital of his 'government of the Corsican nation'.
