Fort Boyard
Halfway between the islands of Aix and Oléron, Fort Boyard was designed above all to protect the Île d'Aix roadstead and the royal arsenal of Rochefort. The range of the cannons of the time did not allow crossfire between the roadstead fort on Aix and the Saumonards battery on Oléron. Between the two islands lies the Boyard shoal. The Dutch had mapped the place "Banjaert", sandbank in Dutch, which later gave Boyard. The project to build Fort Boyard goes back to the seventeenth century.
