Donjon de Fouras

Charente-Maritime, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

In the small town of Fouras, close to Rochefort-sur-Mer and La Rochelle, the 'Fort Vauban' stands watch over the town like a lookout. The castle of Fouras was fortified in 1672 by Vauban; today only the keep, which houses the town's regional museum, and the curtain wall remain. A former stronghold, it was part of Vauban's military system protecting the port and arsenal of Rochefort.

The fort of Fouras, also called the Fouras semaphore, is a 15th- and 17th-century fortification built on the site of an 11th-century castle. Tourist leaflets wrongly call it 'Fort Vauban', although the original citadel was not built by Vauban.
