Château de Buzay
The Château de Buzay, in the Charente-Maritime, has been listed as a historic monument since 1950. This large estate was built around 1770 for a family of La Rochelle shipowners, who were fond of prestigious country houses to display a fortune made from the infamous triangular slave trade.
The château follows the neoclassical lines of the Louis XVI style and is perfectly preserved inside and out: its layout, furniture and arrangement, and the décor of its rooms, such as panelling and family portraits, have been kept in their original state. The visit continues through its French formal garden and park, both listed, fine examples of late 18th-century garden design, with many paths through more or less formal green spaces.
