Florac

Lozère, Occitanie

Florac-Trois-Rivières is a commune of Lozère at the confluence of the Tarn, the Tarnon and the Mimente, between the Causses and the Cévennes. A sub-prefecture of the département, it houses the headquarters of the Cévennes National Park. The village developed around the Pêcher spring, a karst spring that drains the west edge of the Causse Méjean and gushes in the heart of the town.

The castle, built on a tufa hill at the beginning of the thirteenth century, was destroyed during the Wars of Religion then rebuilt in 1652. This position, at the crossroads of rugged regions where Catholics and Protestants clashed, explains its role as a stronghold. Today, Florac is a popular starting point for exploring the Tarn gorges, the Causse Méjean and the Cévennes valleys, and has about 2,100 inhabitants.
