La Garde-Guérin
La Garde-Guérin is a fortified village in the Lozère, on the edge of the Chassezac, part of the commune of Prévenchères and ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Founded in the tenth century to ensure security on the Lozère plateau, where many brigands raged, it became the residence of a community of men-at-arms recruited from the nobility, the pariers.
The latter escorted travellers in exchange for a toll right. Of the old castle, only the keep remains, whose top offers an extensive view over the Chassezac gorges and the Cévennes. The granite houses and narrow lanes make up a very well-preserved ensemble, to be discovered on foot.
