Château du Tournel

Lozère, Occitanie

The ruins of the Château du Tournel overlook the Lot valley from a rocky peak in the commune of Saint-Julien-du-Tournel, at the foot of Mont Lozère, in the Lozère. The fortress, recorded from the 13th century, was the seat of the barony of Le Tournel, one of the great lordships of the Gévaudan.

The site is being restored and the interior cannot be visited, but visitors can walk around it and enjoy a wide view over the Lot valley and Mont Lozère. A discovery trail of about 1.2 km, created by the commune and the Cévennes National Park, presents the history of the site and its surroundings.

Access is by the D901 between Bagnols-les-Bains and Le Bleymard, with roadside parking near the Tournel tunnel. Practical information is available from the Cœur de Lozère tourist office in Mende.
