Château de Florac

Lozère, Occitanie

The date of construction of the Château de Florac, in the Lozère, is uncertain, but its position on high ground (a mound of calcareous tufa), near the Vibron stream, made it a strong point in the town's defences, sorely tested during the Wars of Religion.

Today the château houses the headquarters of the Cévennes National Park. Its restoration has preserved the building's original silhouette, notably its two round towers with pointed roofs. Since 2016 Florac has been part of the new commune of Florac-Trois-Rivières. The château on its mound is part of the townscape at the foot of the Tarn gorges.
