Château de Miral

Lozère, Occitanie

The Château de Miral is in the commune of Bédouès, in the Lozère, in the Cévennes, about ten kilometres from Florac on the road to Le Pont-de-Montvert. It overlooks the confluence of the Rûnes and the Tarn and controlled access to the upper Tarn valley.

The keep, probably built at the end of the 13th century, is surrounded by ramparts. From the 14th to the 16th century the lords of Malbosc-Miral built their residence and outbuildings around it, and it reached its present size in the 16th and 17th centuries. During the Revolution the family that succeeded them was sentenced to death and the château sold; it then gradually fell into ruin.

A private restoration began in the early 1980s, and the château has been registered as a historic monument since 1984. The available sources do not specify current access arrangements.
