In the heart of the Tarn gorges, in the Lozère, stands a château of legends, protected by a world of golden cliffs, water and tall trees. The beautiful Soubeyrane built it 500 years ago for happiness, and its stone staircases and time-polished furniture still seem to echo with the rustle of silk and the jingle of spurs. It is now a hotel and is not open to visitors.
The castle of Castelbouc stands above the village of the same name, in the commune of Sainte-Enimie, in the Lozère.
The tower, once the castle keep, is the only remnant of the medieval fortress; despite much research, its builder is still unknown.
The castle is recorded among the King of France's possessions in the 13th century, which dates its construction to that period.
Its date of construction is uncertain, but its position on a tufa mound made it a key point in Florac's defences during the Wars of Religion.
A Gévaudan castle recorded in the Middle Ages as Castrum de Monte Judeo, whose demolition ordered in the 17th century never happened.
2 km south of Meyrueis, in a fine state forest, this 15th- and 16th-century château houses exhibitions and a Cévennes National Park information centre.
