Château de Chanac

Lozère, Occitanie

The tower, the former keep, is the only remnant of the medieval fortress of Chanac, in the Lozère. Despite much research, it is still not known who had it built: erected at the end of the 12th or the beginning of the 13th century, it may be the work of the King of Aragon or of the Bishop of Gévaudan.

The ruins of the castle were sold as national property, then passed to the commune of Chanac in 1988. The keep was then listed as a historic monument.

The tower can be visited during the European Heritage Days in September and the Journée du patrimoine de pays in June. A staircase built into the thickness of the wall leads to the top; the ground-floor vault is the only one still standing, the other two having collapsed over the centuries.
