Château de Montjézieu
The Château de Montjézieu, in the Lozère, is mentioned in an act of homage to the King of Aragon, then master of the Gévaudan, and later seems to have belonged to the bishops of Mende. In the paréage act of 1307 it appears as Castrum de Monte Judeo, which suggests that Montjézieu was home to a Jewish community. Yet 1307 is also the year the Jews were expelled from the Gévaudan on the bishop's orders: the castle would then have become an episcopal possession.
After the Wars of Religion, the Estates of Languedoc ordered its demolition between 1653 and 1656, so that it could no longer serve as a refuge. For an unknown reason the order was not carried out, unlike for many castles in the region.
