Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie

Évol is a village in the Pyrénées-Orientales attached to the commune of Olette, about two kilometres north-west of the town. It is ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and is overlooked by the ruins of an old feudal castle, as well as the bell tower of its Romanesque church.

The village shows remarkable architectural homogeneity. The houses are built of local schist, brown or blackish, in stones laid on top of each other, and covered with bluish lauze roofs. Several old quarries remain in the valley.

The church of Saint-André has been listed as a historic monument since 1943.

The village is explored on foot, by narrow lanes that climb towards the castle, and the visit lets you observe close up the construction of the schist walls and lauze roofs, as well as the Romanesque bell tower that overlooks the houses.
