Eus

Pyrénées-Orientales, Occitanie

Designed for defence, Eus repelled the French in 1598 and in 1793 the Spanish army that then dominated the Conflent. The eighteenth-century church of Saint-Vincent stands on the site of the Roman camp that watched the road from Terrenera to Cerdanya, and of Notre-Dame de la Volta, the old castle chapel built in the thirteenth century.

At the entrance to Eus, the Romanesque chapel is dedicated to the patron saint of winegrowers and to Saint Gauderic. It opens onto a thirteenth-century porch in pink Villefranche-de-Conflent marble.
