Dinan

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne

Dinan, in the Côtes-d'Armor, is a medieval town perched above the Rance valley. Its ramparts, raised between the thirteenth and fifteenth centuries, encircle the old centre, with their towers and fortified gates. They are walked on foot, notably along the Promenade de la Duchesse-Anne that runs along the enclosure from the Jerzual gate. The restoration of the north front, including the Jerzual gate, was completed in 2026.

The castle, from the fourteenth century, is dominated by a keep built at the end of the century under Duke John IV. It now houses the town museum.

Rue du Jerzual, very steep and lined with half-timbered houses and craftsmen's shops, descends to the port, on the Rance. The old centre brings together many half-timbered houses, churches and squares. Guided tours, notably of the ramparts, are offered, sometimes by reservation.
