Château du Guildo

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne

On a rocky spur rising twenty metres above the Arguenon estuary, the ruins of the Château du Guildo occupy a magnificent site between Saint-Cast and Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer. This courtyard castle covering more than 3,000 m², a residence of the ducal family of Brittany in the 15th century, is linked to the tragic memory of Prince Gilles of Brittany, arrested here in 1446.

Owned by the département since 1981 and listed as a historic monument, the site was cleared by volunteer work camps and then studied during major archaeological excavation campaigns, which notably uncovered wall paintings. You can wander freely among the walls of the great hall, the towers and the curtain walls, with a fine view over the estuary and the little port of Le Guildo, on the coastal path.
