Château de la Hunaudaye

Côtes-d'Armor, Bretagne

The vast forests of La Hunaudaye, Saint-Aubin and Coatjégu must have played a major role in choosing the site of this castle, built after 1220 by the Tournemine family, apparently on a significant site still unoccupied. The castle lies below the farmland, next to a meadow. A causeway carries the access road across the river and also dams the lord's lake, which originally was probably a fish reserve, a source of water power for a mill and a defence on the south side, since it fed the deep moat around the castle. The building is a regular pentagon with five corner towers and a keep beside the entrance. The castle of La Hunaudaye was rebuilt at the end of the fourteenth or start of the fifteenth century and renovated in the Renaissance, when the elegantly moulded doors and windows were added.
