Citadelle de Belle-ile-en-Mer
The citadel of Belle-Île-en-Mer, at Le Palais, overlooks the port and the entrance to the island, the largest of the Breton islands after Groix. Built from 1549, it covers about 10 hectares, with ramparts of about four kilometres. It brings together about ten buildings, totalling more than 10,000 m² of floor space, not counting very many casemates, and keeps impressive moats.
Belle-Île, rocky, lies in the Bay of Biscay, 12 kilometres south of Quiberon. The citadel was fortified by Vauban, then served as a prison. It now houses a museum and a hotel. The walk on the ramparts offers fine views over the port and the sea.
