Cirque de Mourèze
The Mourèze cirque is a dolomite site of about 340 hectares, in the Hérault, near Lake Salagou and the village of Villeneuvette. This rock, about 160 million years old, was shaped by erosion and the differential dissolution of a highly fractured massif. The result is a ruin-like landscape of pillars and pinnacles, more modest than the Dolomites of the Alps but spectacular in appearance.
Visitors discover a real labyrinth of rocks that imagination has named: the Sphinx, the Guardian, the Oracle, the Bear or the Shepherd, some shapes recalling a skull or a bird of prey. Developed hiking trails cover part of the cirque, and the village of Mourèze, on its edge, serves as a starting point for walks.
