Château du Taureau

Finistère, Bretagne

The château du Taureau is a "sea fort" set on an islet, at the entrance of the Morlaix river, in the bay of the same name, off Plouézoc'h. Built in the sixteenth century, it was rebuilt by Vauban in the eighteenth century. It has in turn served as defence, prison, second home, then sailing school, before being abandoned in the early 1980s.

Restored since, it is visited today in summer, on a boat crossing. Departures are organised from Carantec, Plougasnou (port of Le Diben) and Roscoff. The semi-guided visit lasts about an hour on site, and booking is compulsory for departures from Carantec and Plougasnou.

The château also offers a singular viewpoint over the Bay of Morlaix.
