Château de Val

Cantal, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

A 15th-century fortress, the Château de Val, in the Cantal, stands majestically on its rocky islet, its slender silhouette with six towers crowned with machicolations reflected in the vast lake of Bort-les-Orgues. In the main courtyard is the Gothic chapel dedicated to Saint Blaise.

The château is entered through an iron-clad door whose tympanum bears a bas-relief with the fleur-de-lis arms of the d'Estaing family. The wall-walk offers a splendid view over the lake. The visit ends with the roof timbers of a tower, an interesting piece of work by 15th-century craftsmen.
