Château de Rully
The château de Rully, in Saône-et-Loire, is a medieval fortress built around a square twelfth-century keep. Its military architecture includes a wall-walk, battlements, machicolations and arrow slits. The residential wings date from the early Renaissance.
It remains a family home, not a museum. Visits are by appointment, all year round, and are often led by the owners themselves. They can be followed by a commented wine tasting, in the medieval kitchen or the fifteenth-century cellar.
The château is about twenty kilometres south of Beaune, between Mercurey and Chalon-sur-Saône, in the Côte Chalonnaise.
