Château de Couches
The castle of Couches, in the Saône-et-Loire, stands below the town, on a ledge overlooking the Creuse valley. It is one of the former fortresses of the Duchy of Burgundy and protected the road from Paris to Chalon-sur-Saône via Autun. Dating from the 11th century, it belonged to Lord Gaudry, then in the 12th century to Hugues, lord of La Roche-Nolay.
It is one of fourteen exceptional places open to the public that have been grouped for some twenty years in a network of Burgundian sites. It bears witness to the military history of the Duchy of Burgundy.
