Château de Sully

Saône-et-Loire, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

Sully is said to owe its origins to the Roman general Sullius, who supposedly built a villa here in Julius Caesar's time, after pursuing and killing a Gallic chief in the Battées forest. Unfortunately no trace of that villa remains.

It was not until the twelfth century that the lord Gauthier de Sully had a fortified castle built at Sully: drawbridge, eight corner towers, moats… everything needed to defend the valley. Of this stronghold there remain today one of the eight corner towers and foundations that served as the base for the new building.
