Château de Roquetaillade

Gironde, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Roquetaillade, in the heart of Aquitaine, is an architectural ensemble made of two castles of the twelfth and early fourteenth centuries, both within the same enclosure. The same family has occupied it since 1306. Two major restorations marked its history: that of the Renaissance, which left in particular monumental fireplaces, and that of Viollet-le-Duc, in the nineteenth century, which turned the building into a fortress palace with the help of Edmond Duthoit. The latter decorated particularly the Saint-Michel chapel. A park with century-old foliage surrounds the building. The Association des Amis de Roquetaillade created a living rural museum, "La Métairie", at the castle's gates, which has a unique twelfth-century dovecote. This museum is a reconstruction of rural life around 1850 with its animals, objects, instruments, decor and smells.
