Château de Prény

Meurthe-et-Moselle, Grand Est

The château de Prény is a medieval fortress at Prény; it was the last stronghold of the dukes of Lorraine facing the bishops of Metz. The first château of Prény was erected on lands of the abbey of Saint-Pierre-aux-Nonnains of which the duke of Lorraine became the advocate. First entrusted to loyal followers of the Lorraine dynasty, the de Conflans who became the de Prény, the citadel became in the twelfth century the main residence of the dukes of Lorraine before their settlement in Nancy in 1298.
