Château de Portes
The château de Portes is a fortress of the early eleventh century, in the commune of Portes, in the Gard, at the crossing of the pass of the same name, at 577 metres' altitude. It watched over the old way called the Régordane, used by pilgrims to Saint-Gilles and crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. This way linked Auvergne to the Mediterranean.
Its strategic position offers a vast panorama, from Mont Lozère to the Alps. The château has been listed as a historic monument since 1984 and has been made Ambassador of the Cévennes National Park, UNESCO World Heritage, since 2011. It is visited in connection with the Régordane path, now a hiking route.
