Château de Saint-Jean-du-Gard

Gard, Occitanie

The château of Saint-Jean-du-Gard, in the Gard, the seat of a seigneury created by Francis I, was burned by royal troops in the 16th century, immediately rebuilt and enlarged in the 17th.

Many illustrious figures stayed within its walls, including Marshal de Thoiras, the Duke of Rohan, Basville, intendant of Languedoc, the Count of Broglie, the Duke of Noailles, Marshal de Montrevel and Marshal de Villars, all linked to the Wars of Religion that marked the Cévennes and the château from the 16th to the 18th century.
