Château de Pagax

Aveyron, Occitanie

The history of the Château de Pagax, in the Aveyron, is still very incomplete. The oldest mention of it dates from 1259. It was originally the castle of a royal official, built to establish the authority of the King of France in the region.

Its name bears witness to this: Pagax was once spelt Pagas and is still pronounced 'Pagasse'. Pagas, from the Latin pagus, refers to a tax district or payment, and designates a crossing point.
