Château d'Estaing

Aveyron, Occitanie

The Château d'Estaing overlooks the village of the same name, in the Aveyron, where the Lot meets the Coussane. The barony of Estaing is recorded as early as 1028; the present building was remodelled in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries.

It is arranged around an old square keep, topped by five turrets, and buildings of varying heights set around a terrace overlooking the Lot. The chapel of the lords of Estaing dates from the 15th century. Sold as national property in the Revolution, the château became a convent and boarding school run by the Sisters of Saint Joseph in 1836, then passed to the commune in 2000.

Listed as a historic monument in 1945, it was bought in 2005 by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, his brother and their cousin, and since 2012 has housed the Valéry Giscard d'Estaing foundation. A visitor route and a permanent exhibition are offered in the restored rooms.
