Château d'Onet-le-Château

Aveyron, Occitanie

Listed as a historic monument, the château of Onet-Village, which gave the town its name, is thought to have been built in the 16th century by the canons of Rodez, who used it as a summer residence and took refuge there in times of plague. A legend claims that an earlier castle already stood here, built by the Girma brothers around 1200, who are said to have been burned themselves on the Place des Olms (today's Place de l'Olmet) in Rodez after trying to set it on fire.

At the heart of the château, a chapel displays a Flamboyant Gothic style. For safety, it had no direct access from outside; an outside entrance on the east side, together with two side chapels, was only added in the 19th century. To the south, a rose window is curiously protected by an outer window. Around 1930 the château served as both presbytery and school. Now owned by the commune, it hosts many cultural and community events, and fine, large fireplaces in perfect condition survive on the ground, first and second floors.
