Château de Najac

Aveyron, Occitanie

The château de Najac is a fortress that stands in the commune of Najac, in the Aveyron. It was built between 1253 and 1266 by Alphonse of Poitiers, brother of Louis IX, on the foundations of an old castrum and on its Romanesque keep, built around 1100 by Bertrand de Saint-Gilles, son of Raymond IV.

The fortress has for 900 years occupied the top of a particularly steep rocky spur overlooking a loop of the Aveyron. Its characteristic silhouette is spotted for miles around, witness of people's interest in this strategic place. The village of Najac, stretched along the ridge, is ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, and the visit combines the two.
