Château de Murol

Puy-de-Dôme, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The château de Murol rises on a basalt cone and overlooks the village of Murol, at the foot of the Sancy massif, in the Puy-de-Dôme. Founded in the eleventh or twelfth century, it commanded three important roads of the region. In the late fourteenth century, Guillaume de Sam, known as Guillaume II de Murol, strengthened the fortress: he completed the inner castle, built the keep and the eastern buildings.

In the fifteenth century, the castle passed to the Estaing family through the marriage of Gaspard d'Estaing to Jehanne de Murol. Spared by the dismantling ordered by Richelieu and then by the Revolution, it gradually lost its residential function and served successively as a prison, a brigands' lair and a quarry. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1889.

The costumed visit evokes life at the court of Guillaume de Murol in 1426 in restored and themed rooms, and the wall-walk offers a 360° panorama over the Sancy massif.
