Château de Montmelas

Rhône, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The château de Montmelas is a former fortress, rebuilt in the thirteenth or fourteenth century and restored in neo-Gothic aesthetics in the nineteenth. It stands in the commune of Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin, in the Rhône, in the Pierres Dorées country. Written traces of it exist from the year 970: initially a stronghold of the lords of Beaujeu, it then passed into the hands of the Bourbons, and it was in 1566 that it became the property of the family that lives there today.

Towards the end of the tenth century, Montmelas enters history overlooking the valley. The château, surrounded by vines, can be visited on certain occasions and is to be discovered with the neighbouring golden villages.
