Château de Jouillat
The Château de Jouillat is described as the finest château in the Creuse. It dates from the 15th century and was originally a military defence tower rather than a seigneurial castle, as shown by its reversed spiral staircase. The tower's sole purpose was to protect two other castles.
It was converted into a home in the 19th century, when the large spaces of its three levels were divided into living rooms and the fireplaces were rebuilt, anachronistically, in 19th-century style. The piers of its gateway are topped by two statues, each showing a lion devouring a man; they probably date from Gallo-Roman times and do not come from the area.
