Château de Bourdeilles

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Two castles from different periods (medieval and Renaissance), built on a rocky terrace topped by a rampart overlooking the Dronne. First, a medieval castle from the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, with a 35-metre octagonal keep, a seigneurial mill, a bridge with cutwaters, terraced gardens and fortifications. Then a sixteenth-century Renaissance palace housing a prestigious collection of nearly 700 pieces of furniture, including tables, credenzas, tapestries, armchairs and pewter, set out in state rooms.

The fortress remained French until 1360, when the Treaty of Brétigny gave the Périgord back to the English.
