Château de Beauvais
The Château de Beauvais is at Lussas-et-Nontronneau, in the Dordogne, about six kilometres from Nontron. It overlooks the valley that separates it from the village of Lussas and is a square building flanked by two round pepper-pot towers.
The site was first a farming estate linked to the Templar commandery of Le Soulet, then to the Hospitallers. It has a fifty-metre well dug by hand into the limestone. Recorded as a noble residence in 1450, the château was mostly built in the second half of the 16th century by the du Faure family. It then passed to the des Cars family, to a cognac merchant in 1872, then to the Callandreau family. A dovecote and a covered well complete the ensemble.
Partly listed in 1973 and fully listed since 2011, the private château opens to visitors in summer, during the Châteaux en fête and the European Heritage Days.
