Château d'Auberoche

Dordogne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

Auberoche, in the Dordogne, became known in the Hundred Years' War for the decisive battle fought there in October 1345.

In 1430 the castle was razed and wiped off the landscape. All the towers but one were pulled down, along with the buildings inside the curtain wall, which was itself levelled as low as possible wherever this could be done. Only the castle chapel was spared by the demolishers and still stands at the end of the spur of white rock that gave the site its name. Deprived of the castle at its heart, the castellany of Auberoche was gradually broken up until the 18th century.
