Château d'Epoisses

Côte-d'Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté

The Château d'Époisses is in the village of Époisses, in the Côte-d'Or. It dates from the Middle Ages, was altered by its successive owners and partly demolished during the French Revolution. It still encloses the village's parish church.

It is surrounded by a double ring of fortifications enclosing 15th-century houses, the church and a dovecote with 3,000 nesting holes. The château itself is flanked by large towers and surrounded by moats. Inside, the 17th-, 18th- and 19th-century décor includes fine antique furniture and many portraits. The village is also famous for its cheese, Époisses, a soft cheese of the area.
