Château d'Avully
In the Bas-Chablais, between Lake Geneva and the Voirons, the fortified house of Avully controlled the passage into the Chablais in the Middle Ages. It was built on the site of a Roman villa, whose tiles and ceramics were found during the restoration. Mentioned at the beginning of the 14th century as the property of a family that were vassals of the Faucigny, it later passed to the Boëge family and then, in 1499, to a family of Geneva burghers who remodelled it in the 16th century.
Long in ruins, the fortified house has been restored by its present owner and today presents its towers and moats. Listed as a historic monument since 1974, in the heart of a protected site, this private property opens its doors for tours and events on certain dates.
