Château d'Apcher
The founding date of the seigneurial castle of the barons of Apcher, in the Lozère, is unknown; the tower that dominates the site and the surrounding countryside may date from the 11th or 12th century. The remains of the stronghold now include this tower, a chapel, an ice house and a well. Archaeological excavations in 2000 and 2001 uncovered two curtain-wall towers and a large hall.
The square tower has three square storeys with round barrel vaults; it has a flat roof and keeps part of its machicolation. The chapel is a small single-nave building of two barrel-vaulted bays, with a choir ending in a polygonal apse with a half-dome vault. The entrance is on the south side, with a bell gable on the west. The walls are built of granite rubble.
