Chaos de la Dame Jouanne
The Dame Jouanne rock, near Larchant in Seine-et-Marne, is the highest rock around Paris: rising to about 15 metres, it dominates the surrounding sandstone chaos in the south of the Fontainebleau forest. The massif is said to take its name from Jeanne de Malicorne, who held rights over the area in the thirteenth century. It is now a favourite site for climbers and hikers, notably via the GR13, which crosses this landscape of sand, pines and sandstone boulders.
