Gorges de Franchard
The Gorges de Franchard, west of Arbonne-la-Forêt in the Fontainebleau forest, form a vast chaos of sandstone blocks cut by sandy paths, shaped by the differential erosion of sandstone over geological eras. The site keeps the remains of a former hermitage occupied until the eighteenth century, with a restored chapel and a spring still visible. Very popular with boulderers since the early twentieth century, it is one of the historic high places of climbing in Île-de-France. Several waymarked circuits let you explore the rock chaos and reach viewpoints over the surrounding forest.
