Fontainebleau
Built at the gates of its immense state forest, Fontainebleau owes its renown to its château, a hunting lodge turned royal and then imperial residence over nearly eight centuries. But the town itself deserves a stroll, with its Louis XIII-style brick and stone town hall, its wide avenues lined with fine houses and its lively market on Rue Grande. Fontainebleau long hosted an important garrison and a NATO base, which left it a cosmopolitan character still perceptible today. Around the town, the Fontainebleau forest, with its sandstone rocky chaos, attracts hikers and climbers from around the world, making the town a favoured starting point for discovering one of the most renowned forest massifs of the Paris region.
