Chêne Jupiter
The Jupiter Oak was one of the remarkable trees of the forest of Fontainebleau, in the Seine-et-Marne, renowned for its exceptional age before its death in 1994. Left standing rather than felled, its barkless trunk and bare branches give it a sculptural silhouette that still impresses walkers on the forest paths.
It stands in a part of the forest where other ancient oaks bear witness to long-standing forest management. The decision to leave it standing reflects the current interest in dead wood, a valuable habitat for forest wildlife and plants.
