Château de Nemours

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France

A true symbol of the town of Nemours, the castle is inseparable from its history, that of the lordship and then the duchy of Nemours. The main building, flanked by four corner towers, is linked to a tall square tower by a narrow gallery. On the left bank of the Loing, in the heart of the old medieval town, it is one of the only town castles in Île-de-France to have survived.

The castle is thought to have been built in the mid-twelfth century by Gauthier de Villebéon, lord of Nemours and Grand Chamberlain to the king under Louis VII and Philip Augustus, until his death in 1205. In 1977 the building was finally listed as a historic monument, and it obtained the "Musée de France" label under the museums law of 4 January 2002.
