Château de Sainte-Assise

Seine-et-Marne, Île-de-France

Built by Louis Lefèvre de Caumartin, the Château de Sainte-Assise, in the Seine-et-Marne, had several famous owners in the 17th and 18th centuries, from the man of letters Jean de La Chapelle, a rival of Racine, to Madame de Montesson, morganatic wife of the Duke of Orléans, by way of Jean-Baptiste Gluck, director of the Gobelins manufactory, and Jean-Baptiste de Monthullé, a counsellor at the Parlement.

The Duke of Orléans added two wings and a pump that raised water from the Seine; the château, four times larger than today, rivalled Versailles. After the duke's death it passed through several owners who ruined it. It was bought by the Count de Pourtalès, who gave it its present appearance.
