Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Strasbourg
Strasbourg's Notre-Dame cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral built in Strasbourg, representative of Gothic architecture. At 142.11 metres, having been the tallest building in the world from 1647 to 1874, it is currently the second tallest cathedral in France after Rouen's, completed in 1876 and peaking at 151 metres. With more than 4 million visitors a year, it is the second most visited cathedral in France after Notre-Dame de Paris. It is recognisable by its single bell tower topped by a spire. "A prodigy of the gigantic and the delicate" according to Victor Hugo, the splendour of the cathedral is visible from very far across the Alsace plain and can be seen from as far as the Vosges or the Black Forest. It stands in a district surrounded by the river Ill, on the cathedral square, among old buildings.
