Cascade de Salle la Source et sa Grotte

Aveyron, Occitanie

Salles-la-Source is an Aveyron village between Rodez and Conques, built in tiers in the hollow of a cirque of limestone cliffs, on the edge of the Causse Comtal. A singular waterfall crosses it: the water, coming from a resurgence fed by underground circulation, falls from the cliff, between the houses, about twenty metres, before joining a basin that extends into a cave.

The force of the water was long used: an old mill stands near the fall, and a small hydroelectric plant was installed in 1928. Its operation has been the subject of local debate because of its effect on the waterfall's flow.

The village also has a Romanesque church and a museum of traditional arts and crafts set in a former wool spinning mill.
