Cascade de Jarreaux

Creuse, Nouvelle-Aquitaine

The Jarrauds waterfall, also written Jarreux, is on the Maulde, at Saint-Martin-Château, in the south-west of the Creuse, near Bourganeuf. According to the Limousin geological inventory, the water falls about fifteen metres in a corridor bordered by cliffs and granite blocks of the Millevaches plateau; the announced heights vary, however, according to sources.

The site has been listed since 1939 for its scenic interest, with an extension in 1990 that included the town of Saint-Martin-Château. It is linked to the history of the electrification of Bourganeuf, one of the first towns in Europe to receive electricity in the late nineteenth century.

A car park is laid out at the bridge over the Maulde. You reach the waterfall in a few minutes on foot by a small path in the undergrowth, or by a hiking circuit of about 1.2 kilometres.
